Although her early aspirations were in fashion design Maria eventually gravitated to the arts. In 1994 she began drawing and painting under the guidance of painter Arturo Hernandez. The following year, 1995, she enrolled at the Diego Rivera School of Art, Zamora, 1995-98. During her studies she participated in numerous exhibitions and was invited to participate with the art group Artemisa, headed by her art teacher Nancy Almazan, 1997-1998.
From 1998 to present she has continued to participate in solo and collective art exhibitions notably at the Casa de la Cultura, Morelia Michoacán, 1997. Omo Gallery, Fabrica la Aurora, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, 2015. Centro Cultural Antiguo Jesuita, Patzcuaro Michoacán, 2016. Exposición de arte Fundación Hidalgo, Pachuca Hidalgo, 2016, and Casa ITESO Clavijero, Guadalajara, Jalisco,MX 2019.
In addition she was commissioned to create book covers for two book publications, “El Paradigma de la Pervercion”, by Nancy Almazan, published by Artemisa, 2017 and “Voces Que Acompañan Silencio” by Sofia Orozco, published by Letra Uno, 2019.
Currently she works creating original artwork with Arte Sandoval Maciel Gallery, which she co-founded with her husband and artists R. Sandoval.
Private collectors that have acquired Maciel’s work include places like Laguna Niguel,Ca. San Diego,Ca. San Jose,Ca. Hayward, Ca. Las Vegas, Nv. Plantation, Fl. Bend Oregon. Pennsylvania, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mex and Mexico City, Mex.
Maria Maciel established a children’s art workshop since 2011, where she teaches art history, painting and drawing techniques to kids 5 to 13 years of age every Saturday morning. The Suriname International Art Fair marks Maria Maciel’s first international exhibition.
